In the lazy summer heat, you’ll certainly appreciate the sparkling new pool. You can enjoy the amazing stargazing and the miles of open countryside anytime of the year. (Note to self: bring walking shoes and maybe a bike or two). The strategically placed braai plek, and the generally chilled-out atmosphere are conducive to reading, swimming, strolling around the farm and surrounds, as well as inebriated board game play, and profound conversation (“do you think the chops are ready?”) around the braai. In the chilly winters, you’ll probably appreciate the indoor fireplaces.
We hope that you will encounter some of the abundant wildlife around Journeys Rest. In addition to South Africa’s national bird, the blue crane, we often see the grey heron, jackal buzzard, cape eagle owl, barn owl, malachite sunbird and many others. As far as mammals go, you may be fortunate enough to spot a porcupine, duiker, steenbok, mongoose or bat-eared fox to name a few. Please respect all the wildlife, and keep in mind that they will avoid you if given the opportunity and should not be antagonized.
Please feel free to come along for feeding time on the farm – The donkeys (Rosy and Rupert) and the horses are all very inquisitive and friendly; don’t forget a carrot or two.
