The Cottages

relaxed, private

When we arrived, the cottages at Journeys Rest were inhabited worker huisies. There was an outhouse, no electricity, and you can still see their water-tank, built in 1960. We decided to do a bit of sprucing up, installing electricity, plumbing, and running water, as well as a swimming pool, and other bits and bobs to make this self-catering accommodation just a touch more plush.

At Journey’s Rest self-catering accommodation, we’re all about relaxation and privacy, so the cottages close proximity to each other is no cause for panic – they’re never let to more than one group at a time. That means it’ll just be you, your mates, and the passing sheep, horses and donkeys. The two cottages face onto a central courtyard which has a covered outdoor lounge (attached to Dorethea se Plek ) and a braai area. The swimming pool is next to the braai area, alongside Dorethea se Plek’s kitchen.

Both cottages come with a fully equipped kitchenette (fireplace, plus mini oven/hob, microwave, toaster, kettle, fridge, cutlery and crockery), bedding, towels and wall panel heaters. Wood and braaing equipment are also provided. Remember, the accommodation is self-catering… you’ll need that tjop en dop!

Dorethea se Plek

accommodation sleeps four (two on a sleeper couch)

Dorethea se Plek is the slightly larger and more kitted out of the two cottages. It has an intimate lounge which is open to the kitchen and a small table. The kitchen has a fireplace which you can use to make your hearty breakfasts, or just snuggle up to it while you’re playing card games by firelight. It also has DSTV and a flat screen TV. The DSTV card is provided, so there’s no need to remember your own. There’s a bathroom with a shower, and the bedroom has a double bed and a mosquito net, (which is really just for the ambiance) and a wall panel heater (which really is to keep you warm).  Dorethea se Plek also has a double pull out sleeper couch in the lounge and another wall panel heater to keep the chill away when the fire has died down.

Dorethea lived in this cottage almost her whole life. When we moved in, the farmer behind us built her a new house on his land, with electricity, running water and plumbing, she still lives there now with her family.

Die Hoenderhok

accommodation sleeps three (one on a sleeper couch)

You won’t feel exactly like a chicken in a hok, but the cosy “Hoenderhok” is the smaller of the two self-catering cottages, and usually a spill over for larger groups of visitors to Journey’s Rest. It has a 3 quarter couch for the third wheel, or the kids who don’t yet have their own wheels. It has a bedroom with a double bed, mosquito net and wall panel heater. There is a lovely sunny bathroom with a shower, and the compact kitchen has view of the sheep fields, as well as its own fireplace.
